Every summer, I find myself in a love affair with avocados. Of course, I enjoy them at all times of the year, but something about the warm weather just keeps me coming back for more…and more…and yep, still more!
Usually I keep avocados in stock to make guacamole or to add to fresh tomato sandwiches, but occasionally I’ll get a little more creative. I first experimented with this avocado sandwich spread recipe in 2016 on a visit to my family in Philly. I could not get over its versatility!
Whether it was on my egg, lettuce, and tomato sandwich for lunch or next to scrambled eggs for breakfast, garlicky avocado spread was the perfect condiment for every meal. It’s a wonderful substitution for mayo for those of you who can’t eat eggs or want something a little healthier.
So, as summer 2020 begins, it’s time to celebrate my favorite “seasonal” food with an update of this recipe for you to try! I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since I first made it. I can’t wait to enjoy it on repeat over the next few months.

How to Make Homemade Avocado Spread
The popularity of avocados has really taken off in recent years, so of course you can now buy avocado spread from the store instead of making it at home. But in my opinion, this healthy homemade version is the way to go! It has minimal ingredients and takes just 5 minutes to prepare.
Here’s how to do it:
- Combine the flesh of a ripe avocado, lemon juice, minced garlic cloves, salt, and olive oil in a food processor.
- Pulse until smooth!
If you don’t have a food processor, you can also use a high-powered Blender like a Vitamix.
Isn’t she a beaut?! I love the stunning green color of this avocado spread, and it was fun to compare the new photos I took with those from 2016. The color hasn’t changed a bit! I did make some small modifications to the recipe, though, and I think the flavor is just perfect now.
Some of you may be wondering if this recipe falls victim to the dreaded avocado color change that occurs when they are exposed to the air. Fortunately, it does not! The spread stays nice and green thanks to the lemon juice.

Just made this to use on my turkey Swiss tomato sandwich. Absolutely delicious! I mashed it with a potato masher so it has some texture to it. Also substituted garlic powder instead of minced garlic. Looking forward to using it on my toast in the morning. Thanks for a great recipe.

This is a favourite of mine, I make buckwheat blinis and couple this spread with smoked salmon topped with dill for a Christmas canapé.
As I can’t have garlic, I use garlic infused avocado oil, and swap between lemon or lime juice with white pepper to give it a little zing.

This is the most surprising taste. There is also a spicy flavor in this mix. Not sure what makes that flavor. I love it! I use 1/2 the oil called for and lemon juice from a bottle was all I had on hand. My avocado was very ripe. This pairs so well on toast and boiled eggs! Thanks for this easy recipe to add avocado to my diet!
